Workshift Descriptions

The following is a descriptive list of the new Working Groups at Mariposa Food Co-op.  If you are a member log in to your account to read the descriptions and tell us your interests.  Someone from Member Coordination will follow up with you to set up your shift!

Workshifts

Store Shifts:
Openers:
Shift Availability: 7 days a week. opening shift (begins ½ hour before store opening)
Time Commitment: Three hours in-store every four weeks.
Description: Your responsibilities would include coming into the coop one half hour (or more, as scheduled) before the store opens. Under the direction of the Store Manager on Duty, or the staff team member working on the floor, you would be responsible for stocking, spoilaging, and general “set up” of goods to ready the store for opening. You may also be cleaning and/or assisting Front End Staff in other capacities if needed. This shift may require lifting up to 50/lbs. Attending occasional working group meetings and/or trainings may be required.

Closers:
Shift Availability: 7 days a week, closing shift (ends ½ after closing)
Time Commitment: Three hours in-store every four weeks.
Description: Your responsibilities would include coming to the coop in the evening and staying one half hour past closing. Under the direction of the Store Manager on Duty, or the staff team member working on the floor, you would be responsible for end-of-the-day clean-up (including mopping and trash collection), as well as putting away perishables and other goods for the night. Your shift would also include stocking and “fronting” products and tidying shelves for the next day. This shift may require lifting up to 50lbs. Attending occasional working group meetings and/or trainings may be required.

Stocking/ Bulk:

Shift Availability: All days, All times
Time Commitment: Three hours in-store every four weeks.
Description: Your responsibilities include working in the store during open hours and restocking and “fronting” products and perishables in the store. Under the direction of the Store Manager on Duty or the staff team member working on the floor, you may be asked to do other tasks associated with stocking, such as product dusting/cleaning and spoilaging. Workers in this group may also be responsible for cleaning shelves and bulk areas and ensuring the neatness and accuracy of displays and signage.
Refilling bulk bin containers and working with wheat, nuts or other food allergens may be part of this shift, so please note on your application if you have any difficulties with this. The ability to lift sacks of dry goods of up to 50lbs. Attending occasional working group meetings and/or trainings may be required.

Receiving:
Shift Availability: M, T, TH, F 10 AM – 2 PM
Time Commitment: Three hours in-store every four weeks.
Description: Under the direction of the Store Manager on Duty, or the staff team member working on the floor, you would be responsible for helping to process incoming orders received at the coop. This shift may take place before or during open hours depending on the type of delivery. Please list any schedule constraints you may have on your application, as we need to ensure receivers are able to be punctual and stay for the duration of their shift. Receivers may be responsible for pricing, and/or stocking goods and displays in the store as well as in our storage areas. Produce delivery receivers may also be responsible for additional prepping of produce for sale and/or storage. This shift may require lifting up to 50lbs. Please note on your application if this would be a problem for you. Attending occasional working group meetings and/or trainings may be required.

Produce:
Shift Availability: All days and times
Time Commitment: Three hours in-store every four weeks.
Description: Under the direction of the Store Manager on Duty, or the staff team member working on the floor, you would be responsible for prepping, stocking, and culling produce, and maintaining produce displays. Some shifts may start one half hour before the store opens. Produce workers may also be responsible for cleaning the produce areas and ensuring the neatness and accuracy of displays, prices and signage. Attention to produce quality and detail is essential. This shift may require lifting up to 50lbs. Please note on your application if this would be a problem for you. Attending occasional working group meetings and/or trainings may be required.

Bulk Food Packing:
Shift Availability: M, T, TH & F after 5 PM
Time Commitment: Three hours in-store every four weeks.
Description: Under the direction of the Store Manager on Duty, or the staff team member working on the floor, you would be responsible for breaking down and bagging bulk dry goods and/or perishable foods. A worker in this group would work in the food prep area and need to be able to accurately weigh, package, and price foods for individual sale in the store. You will also be responsible for cleaning and sanitizing tools and surfaces. Working with dairy products, wheat, nuts or other food allergens and sanitizing products will be part of this shift. This shift does not require a large amount of physical labor and could be done sitting. Attending occasional working group meetings and/or trainings may be required.

Bulk Cheese Processing
Shift Availability: T, Th 3:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Time Commitment: Three hours in-store every four weeks.
Description: Under the direction of the Meat & Cheese Buyer, the Store Manager on Duty, or the staff team member working on the floor, you would be responsible for cutting, wrapping and labeling bulk cheese. A worker in this group would work in the food prep area and need to be able to accurately weigh, package, and price foods for individual sale in the store. You will also be responsible for cleaning and sanitizing tools and surfaces. Working with dairy products and sanitizing products will be part of this shift. This shift may also require lifting 5-25 lb bulk packages. Attending occasional working group meetings and/or trainings may be required.

Member Services Desk/ Member Coordination Assistant:
Shift Availability: Weekday Evenings and Weekends (all day)
Time Commitment: Three hours in-store or office every four weeks. Additional time for meetings and self coordination.
Description: Under the direction of the Member Coordination Team or Store Manager on Duty, you would be responsible for working behind the member services desk or in the office and performing a range of duties, including: answering general questions or directing people to the appropriate staff member for information, explaining the benefits of membership, issuing guest shopping cards, answering the store phone, etc. Training will be provided, but a working knowledge of MESS, our electronic data storage system and basic coop policies is essential. Attending occasional working group meetings and/or trainings may be required.

Delivery Services:
Shift Availability: Mornings M-F and Saturday. Please note: The co-op has a very limited need for this position. Few shifts available.
Time Commitment: Job specific ability for a range of times and hours depending on delivery type, additional time for self-coordination and/or group meetings.
Description: Under the direction of the Building Manager, Buyers or the Front End Manager, people in this shift would be responsible for pick-up and/or drop-off of goods. Shift types include: Truck/ Van driver (use your own vehicle to pick up local deliveries or drop off waste materials), Car, Bike, Foot Delivery (use your own vehicle/body to deliver food to people who may otherwise not have access to the coop store). Please specify on your application which of these delivery services you’d like to provide. Note: food delivery will be at scheduled times during open hours. Attending occasional working group meetings may be required.

Cleaners (Front End/ Grounds/ Offices, etc.):
Shift Availability: All days, Evenings
Time Commitment: Two hours in-store every four weeks, additional time for self-coordination and/or group meetings and/or shift trainings.
Description: Under the direction of the Store Manager on Duty, or other appropriate coop staff, this worker would be responsible for any or all of the following, including: washing, dusting, mopping, sanitizing and garbage duties for assigned working areas in the building. While we try to use environmentally friendly products wherever possible, we must follow health and food safety guidelines. Bleach and other chemicals may be a part of this position, please list on your applications if you have any needs surrounding this work.

Inventory Crew:
Shift Availability: This shift occurs at odd hours, i.e. very late at night or very early in the morning.
Time Component: You must be willing to work at least three of four inventory shifts per year. Shifts average 6.5 hours in length and occur outside of open store hours. (Hours are subject to change) Shifts usually fall on or near 1/1, 4/1, 7/1, & 10/1. Shift hours may be accomplished as well by assisting before Inventory Day with scheduling other members to help with inventory (not sure if this will be the case in the future, but it is currently). Workers are also responsible for group meetings and/or shift trainings.
Description: Under the direction of the Store Manager, workers would be responsible for administering the coop’s current inventory practices, including: counting goods, organizing and cleaning products, checking for expired goods, etc. This shift does not require a large amount of physical labor and could be done sitting.

Shift Trainer:
Shift Availability: Hours and days of the week vary
Time Component: 1 1/2 hours every two weeks, with addition time for updates and trainer-training.
Description: The Shift Trainer would work with the Store Managers to do several tasks. One would be to provide walk-in training for new members on various in-store shifts. In the absence of trainings, workers in this group would perform and oversee the work done by other workers within the store. A good working knowledge of the different sections of the store and different tasks to be completed across working groups (i.e. bagging, produce stocking, etc.) is essential. The ability to provide feedback to the both the worker and the manager about the quality of work is essential. This work shift can be applied to by anyone who has had an in store work shift for six months.

Maintenance:
Shift Availability: Hours and days of the week vary
Time Component: Will vary according to task
Description: Members with specialized building and trade skills may work with the Building Manger to maintain the functionality of the coop building and its systems. If you have specialized skills, such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical, etc. please note this on your application form

 

Internal Organization Shifts

Note Taker:
Shift Availability: Generally weekday evenings between 6-9, some weekends.
Time Component:
One meeting every four weeks, plus time spent editing and disseminating notes back to the group.
Description:
Members may complete a work shift by taking notes at committee, general membership, or board meetings, and/or other coop functions. A standard note taking template is provided for new note takers.
Requirements:
Typing skills are required and a portable personal computer is helpful, but not required. Please note on your application if you do not have a personal computer to perform this job.

Assistant to Office, Staff or Board:
Shift Availability:
Generally weekdays 9-5, some weekend or evenings possible
Time Component:
Three hours every four weeks
Description:
A worker in this group would serve as an assistant to an employee or officer of the Co-op. Office assistants may be asked to do regular tasks associated with working in the office, including: filing, making copies, database entry, phone calls, light typing, etc. Some available positions include: Education Assistant, General Membership Meeting Assistant, and Member Coordination Assistant(s)
Requirements: Member with this shift should be comfortable and have a basic familiarity with computers.

Orientation Leaders:
Shift Availability: Evenings and weekends (times and days of the week vary)
Time Commitment:
11 monthly shifts per year and four additional working group meetings a year.
Description:
Leaders are responsible for facilitating new member orientations. Leaders will educate prospective members on the basics of Mariposa Co-op, including its history and mission, membership systems, and governance. Leaders will meet as a group four times a year to further their own training and update the orientation. New leaders will go through a short training period before being allowed to lead orientations on their own. A member from this group serves as a delegate to the Education Committee.
Requirements:
It is preferable for members on the orientation committee to have several years of experience as members of Mariposa, as well as experience with facilitation, and most importantly a desire to welcome new members.  

Facilitation Team:
Shift Availability: Generally evenings between 6-9
Time Commitment:
Quarterly meetings, plus facilitation support – as determined by need – for other working groups including board, staff and general membership meetings, in addition to trainings, mediations, and projects organized by the Education committee.
Description:
The facilitation team supports democratic process at Mariposa Co-op. Its primary functions are to (co)facilitate meetings of the board of delegates, committees, and of the general membership, and to train Mariposa’s membership in consensus process, group dynamics, and meeting facilitation. Beyond facilitating meetings, this team also works on curriculum development (for trainings) and requires a small amount of time each quarter for communicating as a team over email and/or in person. A member from this group serves as a delegate to the Education Committee.
Requirements: Applied knowledge of consensus process, group dynamics and meeting facilitation, plus strong skill set in anti-oppression training.

Newsletter Team:
Shift Availability:Generally evenings between 6-9 PM
Time Commitment: six to ten hours per quarter calendar year, or two to three hours per month.
Description: The Newsletter Team produces educational and informational content about Mariposa’s membership, our mission, and Food Justice. Team Members are accountable to the Lead Editor(s) and the Marketing coordinator. Participation in the committee can vary from being a content writer or illustrator, to editing & proof-reading, graphic design, photography, promotion, or content planning (assistant editor). Newsletters come out (at least) quarterly and are circulated among the membership in print, and posted on our website. The team is supported by the Education Coordinator and Education Committee as a project of the Education Spokes Council.
Requirements:

Membership Accountability Team:
Shift Availability:Generally evenings between 6-9 PM
Time Commitment: One two-hour meeting every month, plus some email communication and project work.
Description: The Membership Accountability Team (MAT) is a working group of members under the guidance of the Membership Coordinator. MAT provides a forum to address suggestions and concerns related to how members interact with the co-op. The team also works to ensure that coop policies are member-driven. We meet once a month to brainstorm and draft policies that encourage Mariposa members to maintain a responsible, active, and accountable relationship to the co-op. MAT is also responsible for maintaining requirements for out-of-store working groups.
Requirements: It is helpful, but not required, to have some previous experience as a working member with an in-store work shift.

Finance Committee:
Shift Availability: usually first Thursday at 7-8:30pm
Time Commitment: One 90 min meeting a month plus 5-6 hours of project work per year as needed.
Description: The role of the finance committee is to support the staff finance manager and to develop and maintain the Coop’s financial policies. We consult on other committee and staff projects to understand the financial impact of decisions on the Coop.                                                                                                                                                                                                          Requirements: Finance or business experience required.

Marketing, Event and Outreach Workgroup (MEOW)
Shift Availability:  Times and days of the week vary
Time Commitment: Six to ten hours per quarter calendar year, or two to three hours per month.
Description: MEOW is a group of members who are committed to working towards the on-going promotion of Mariposa Food Co-op’s products, services and the virtues of Mariposa Membership. Members earn shift hours by helping with administrative, event planning, creative, and marketing tasks. Members in this workgroup can also get involved in the planning of Mariposa’s events and programs, or help with on-going neighborhood outreach and canvassing. Requirements: It is helpful, but not required, to have experience or interest in the following: Advertising, Being an ambassador of Mariposa Food Co-op at community events, Creative brainstorming, Detail-oriented work, Event planning, Graphic design, Marketing, Meeting new people, Media production, Photography, Publication design, Writing/Editing

Tool Library (off site: 1314 South 47th Street):
Shift Availability: Saturdays 10-1 PM or 12- 3 PM.
Time Commitment: Three hours at Tool Library once every four weeks. This shift only happens on Saturdays 10am-1pm or 12pm-3pm.
Description: Members working their shift at the Tool Library will receive direction from the Tool Library staff. Likely tasks: Maintenance and basic repair of tools, organizing/cleaning Tool Library, accepting tool donations, checking tools in/out to members, maintaining computer database.
Requirements: None

Website:

Shift Availability: Times and days of the week vary
Time Component: Varies by project. A website admin shift may equal in amount of time commitment per year of most other coop shifts, yet workers in this group need to be flexible in their ability to produce somewhat quick turnaround to work assignments.
Description: Under the administration of the IT coordinator or other staff, member workers would be involved in the maintenance and development of any of the Mariposa website and web presence. Please list all relevant web design and computing skills on your application.
Requirements:

IT/ Programming:
Shift Availability:Times and days of the week vary.
Time Component: Varies by project. IT and program coding shifts usually require more time commitment and workers in this group need to be flexible in their availability during system updates, crashes, etc.
Description: Under the administration of the IT coordinator or Mariposa Electronic Storage System (MESS) Group, member workers are involved in the maintenance and development of any of the following: Mariposa Coop’s internal databases, hardware and software, website, or other IT programs and tools.
Requirements: Programming experience, or a willingness to learn, Python and Django in particular. Please list all relevant computing skills on your application.

Childcare:
Shift Availability: Most childcare shifts take place on weekends                                                                                                      Description: Mariposa offers childcare during  one orientation a month and on the quarterly General Membership Meetings.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     Requirements: Must have childcare experience, including proper references and background checks.

FJAR (Food Justice and Anti-racism Committee):
Shift Availability: Currently 2nd Sunday of the month.
Time Component: The committee meets once monthly. As an alternative or in addition to attending monthly meetings, members can be involved in FJAR through project-teams and study-action cohorts.
Description: FJAR works to critically engage Mariposa board, staff, and membership around issues of social, economic, and environmental oppression and liberation. FJAR’s work is strategic yet varies from education and training, to event planning, outreach, media, and inclusive governance. The working group strives to hold the Mariposa membership and organization as a whole accountable to principles of food justice. This work includes organizing anti-oppression trainings for staff/members, offering solidarity and support to relevant local organizations, strategic organizational development, outreach and other strategies aimed at creating positive social change at Mariposa. A member from this group serves as a delegate to the Education Committee.
Requirements: Relevant experience for FJAR include comfort or familiarity with anti-oppression work which can range from previous trainings, study groups, organizational transformations, political campaigns, or general life experience (for people who have been targets of oppression).  A high level of commitment and engagement is expected for this committee.

Board of Delegates
Shift Availability: Currently the 3rd Thursday of every month
Time Commitment: One 2-hour meeting each month, plus one or more for email communication and other projects. Board delegates also participate in a full day retreat once or twice a year.
Description: The Board of Delegates is a group of elected co-op members who develop policies and make decisions to support our present and future as a member-owned food co-operative. The Board discusses things like Mariposa’s educational goals, community involvement, budget and finances, etc. The Board also acts as a governing body of the coop to set certain policies, such as Mariposa’s hiring policy and workshift policy.We solicit input and expertise from co-op members, committees, and staff with the goal of shaping consistent, transparent policies that serve as a framework for co-op activities and operations.
The Board is made up of Officers (Convener, Secretary, and Treasurer), At-Large delegates, and Committee delegates. While responsibilities vary, all delegates are expected to actively participate in meetings, and may take on additional projects as needed. Delegates are not expected to be experts, but are responsible for soliciting advice or training in areas where additional knowledge or experience is needed. Board decisions and activities are guided by the Cooperative principles, and by Mariposa’s Mission Statement and Bylaws. We use a consensus process and strives to operate according to egalitarian principles.
Requirements: Board Delegates are elected by the membership at the general membership meeting every March.
